Tsavo East is one of the oldest and largest national parks in Kenya, covering a staggering 13,747 square kilometers. Known for its literal “limitless” horizons, the park is a land of iron-red dust and ancient baobabs. It offers a raw, off-the-beaten-path safari experience that feels significantly more wild and untamed than the smaller parks of the Rift Valley.
The Famous “Red Elephants”: Tsavo East is home to Kenya’s largest elephant population. They are famous for their distinct reddish color, a result of bathing in the park’s red volcanic soil to protect their skin from the sun.
The Legend of the Man-Eaters: The park is steeped in history, most notably the “Man-Eaters of Tsavo”—a pair of lions that terrorized railway workers in the late 1890s. Today, its lion prides remain a major draw.
Unique Geography: Featuring the Yatta Plateau (the world’s longest lava flow) and the life-giving Galana River, the landscape is a dramatic backdrop for wildlife photography.
During the dry Season, animals stay close to the Galana River and waterholes, making sightings very predictable, and on the green season it favors more for birdwatchers ( over 500 species ) and seeing the vast red dust turn into vibrant green plains.

The Mudanda Rock: This 1.6km long inselberg acts as a natural water catchment. From the top, you can look down onto a massive natural dam and watch hundreds of elephants come to drink simultaneously.
Bird-watching: With over 500 species recorded, including ostriches, kestrels, and buzzards, Tsavo East is a paradise for ornithologists, especially during the migration months.
The Yatta Plateau: Drive alongside the world’s longest lava flow. This 290km long ridge is a geological marvel and offers a stunning silhouette against the African sunset.
Aruba Dam Excursion: Visit this man-made marvel that attracts thousands of animals and waterbirds, providing some of the most consistent wildlife viewing in the park.
